Agenda For Music Meeting

Published Aug. 30, 2024, 12:50 p.m.

Detailed Agenda:

  • Open with Prayer and Song
      •
  • Why are we doing this?
      • No one complained to the Session about RHC worship music (as far as I am aware).  I wanted to initiate a meeting because I saw the new building as an opportunitiy to look at what our music/sound and interpreter teams do and make it better, if possible.
      • We have large concentration of musically talented people for a church our size.

    • Note about Questions and Comments:  Brief for the sake of not prolonging the meeting.
  • Question: Are you teachable?
      • We are all talented.  We all have room to grow.  Growth may include attributes other than skill.
      • Preparing ourselves to be teachable about song leading will have value -- especially as we expand and possibly add new musicians.
      • Without a mechanism for feedback, we will remain blind to certain aspects of our leadership at best.
      • Any bad habits we have may get worse if unchecked over time.

  • The book of church order (BCO) records how PCA ministers and sessions should conduct church.  What does the BCO say about Song worship?

CHAPTER 51 The Singing of Psalms and Hymns

51-1. Praising God through the medium of music is a duty and a privilege. Therefore, the singing of hymns and psalms and the use of musical instruments should have an important part in public worship.

51-2. In singing the praises of God, we are to sing in the spirit of worship, with understanding in our hearts.

51-3. It is recommended that Psalms be sung along with the hymns of the Church, but that caution be observed in the selection of hymns, that they be true to the Word. Hymns should have the note of praise, or be in accord with the spirit of the sermon.

51-4. The leadership in song is left to the judgment of the Session, who should give careful thought to the character of those asked to lead in this part of worship, and the singing of a choir should not be allowed to displace congregational singing.

51-5. The proportion of the time of public worship given to praise is left to the judgment of the minister, and the singing of psalms and hymns by the congregation should be encouraged.

  • Questions?  Comments?
  • What does Scripture say about Worship Leaders and Worship through song?

    • Thesis:  Music leaders are a traditional role in worship and should be skilled.

      Nehemiah 12:46

For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

      1 Chronicles 15:22

Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.

      Psalm 33:3

Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

    • Thesis:  Worship leaders should be servant leaders. Our leadership is part of our worship.

      Luke 22:26

But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.

      Mark 9:35

And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

      1 Corinthians 9:19

For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.

      1 Corinthians 14:15

What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

    • Thesis: Worship should be God-focused, orderly and edifying.
    • Psalm 47:6

Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

    • John 3:30

He must increase, but I must decrease.”

    • 1 Corinthians 14:26; 40

26  "What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up."
40  "But all things should be done decently and in order."

    • Thesis:  A good worship song: (1) Contains the message of Christ (2) Teaches and/or Admonishes  (3) Is rightly accompanied with gratitude to God (4) Can be recalled (is memorable)

      Colossians 3:16

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

      Acts 16:25

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

    • Thesis:  A bad worship song: (1) Distorts the message of Christ (2) Is otherwise indistinguishable from a good worship song

    • What are some other things that scripture says about worship?
  • What Do Worship Leaders Do?
    • Consider the deaf / interpreter
    • Assort Traditional Hymns and Modern Style Songs (Incorporate Psalms?)
    • Consider vocal range of congregation when choosing keys
    • Provide song sheets for team
    • Review Slides for accuracy (Correct words, verses, ordering, etc.)
    • Consider transitions between songs (Blending, exposition of song, etc.)
    •  Tie-in to the overall liturgy, and or sermon itself

  • Questions or comments about what worship leaders do?

  • Discuss first 4 survey questions and answers plus the comments for the group.

  • Discuss agree / disagree statements
    • Group answers had 3 typical flavors: (1) biased toward agree (2) neutral  (3) biased toward disagree
    • A few answers were biased toward strong agreement: Based on scripture, Excellence playing / singing, Feedback for leaders important,  Good song diversity, Congregational Engagement and Congregation can hear themselves
    • Biased toward disagree: Introduce New songs weekly, More musicians on stage is better, Music / Vocal mix is consistent, Avoiding difficult melodies, It is difficult to give feedback to leaders; More kid friendly songs;
    • neutral: Retire some songs,  prefer traditional hymns, I am often distracted by worship;
    • Biased toward agree: Some songs I don't like to lead, Mix is important,
    • One outlier:  1/2 strong agree / 1/2 strong disagree:  I understand how to introduce a new song

  • Conclusion: My General observations and recommendations for worship leaders / sound teams / Interpreters
  • Considering the congregation:  Adapting songs for corporate worship
    • Vocal leadership
      • Over enunciation
      • Loud and Clear
      • Hit notes more like a piano / Less like a soloist
    • Sound / Mixing Ideals
      • Adjust playing / singing style at the source
      • Compensate at the soundboard
      •
    • Song Consistency vs. Diversity
      • Chords, Vocals, Keys
      • O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus (Style Differences Ok)
      • His Mercy is More (Should unify on Vocal Melody)
      • Develop team agreement on Songs:
      • Point / Counterpoint
    • Slide Preparation and Delivery
      • Making Slides Right
      • Coaching the slide master
  • Refining our Excellent Teams
    • Promote Peer Evaluations (for a time)
